Winning and Losing
The Washington Generals have long been one of my favorite topics, in large part because of the wonderful man who founded them. I wrote numerous times about Red Klotz, who died a year ago. He founded the Generals in 1953 as a team to play the Harlem Globetrotters. The Generals were his legacy, a proud team that almost never won, an underdog just about everyone rooted against, a team that measured its worth how hard people laughed when their pants were pulled down.
His daughter Jody and son-in-law John Ferrari have been running the team in his spirit for the last 20-plus years. And now it is over. On August 1st, 2015 in Wildwood, N.J., the Generals played their last game.
