Wow, there’s so much stuff happening right now! So let’s do another around-the-sports-world roundup. We’ll talk a little golf, a little baseball, a little Michael Jordan, oh, the places we’ll go!

A Guy Named Wyndham Clark

Before I get into a whole other point, let’s pause to talk about just how awesome Wyndham Clark was on Sunday, as he won the U.S. Open. Unless you’re a pretty serious golf fan, you have not heard of Wyndham Clark. He was ranked No. 32 in the world coming into the Open.

The No. 32 men’s tennis player in the world last week was Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. I’ll get back to him shortly.

Clark is 29 years old, and coming into this year, he seemed destined for a profitable but perhaps unfulfilling career as a PGA Tour journeyman. He had never won a tournament. His career highlight was probably losing a playoff to Brian Gay at the 2020 Bermuda Championships. He had never finished higher than 75th at a major championship.

But as the story goes, he worked on himself — working hard with mental coach Julie Elion to find some equanimity in his game and life — and he won the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte a few weeks ago, and on Sunday he played an all-time gutsy round by shooting even par on the grueling final day of a U.S. Open. He held off a Hall of Famer, Rory McIlroy, to win by a shot. Clark made several jaw-dropping par saves along the way. It was pretty inspiring.
