Thank you Joe. Your insights into Grant the person are much appreciated and helpful in this sad time.

After reading Grant’s work for his entire time at Sports Illustrated, it is hard for me to fathom how young he still was. His accomplishments over such a long period seemed the work of an older, more mature man. At 48 he still should have had such a long life and so many more mountains left to climb.

The fact that Grant began to feel ill after he courageously wore the rainbow shirt in such an anti-LGBTQ country and after being detained...well, he obviously embarrassed the Qatari government. My hope is that his death will be fully investigated and that any shadow of doubt about the cause will be eliminated.

Rest in Peace Grant Wahl. A life well and fully lived, even though cut way too short.

I, being just a regular guy, never met Grant. I did read so much of his writing, however. I thought the headline must be a mistake yesterday. Just stunned.

I’m truly sorry for the loss of your friend, Joe. Hang on to all of those memories.
